so i read the story in the latest edition of the Observer... and i had never heard of unschooling before.. evidently there is a kind of school that kind of follows this same kind of thought, it starts with an M but i forget what they said it was anyway, i thought it was an interesting notion... the only real flaw is that it would be hard to get a great many jobs if you go that route... but i admit it does seem attractive |

well you got homeschooling where parents teach their kids unschooling says that kids aren't required to learn anything but they can learn whatever it is their interested in... so the pressure isn't there to learn any one particular thing.. basically no curriculum, it's all set by the student and what he wants to learn the problem, of course, is that in one case a kid decided he didnt want to learn to read until he was a teenager and then it was much more difficult for him to do so... and then obviously there is alot of stuff that the kids just don't learn that society has deemed important but alot of these kids end up learning a craft... like blacksmithing or whatever... and so it isn't really necessary for them to go to college and all of that.. obviously someone who is unschooled would not be able to be a doctor or a lawyer because school is required but it's just the idea of a person being able to learn what they are interested in rather then having to follow a set curriculum that is so attractive |

But how will they know what they're interested in?

jenö's kid was in a montessori school in san fran. he talked very highly of it. sounded so incredible that the wife and i have since decided to go the same route. mainly because of the different life experiences than we both had in traditional schooling... edit: she is the one with a lot more knowledge on the subject than i.

The simplest comparison is this: Imagine being at home and committing grievous error. Mom tells you to think about what you did and gives you time out. In a room with all the accomodations, what good does time out do? A lot of false hope is given (from my own experience with my siblings) and if my two younger brothers ever get to experience public school, it will be a hell of a culture shock for them. | |

The american public school system is a joke, but I would say that kids need direction as well as freedom of choice. I would hope that parents that are sending kids to these type of schools can help their children with the structure and with the ability to understand that there's a ton of other interesting stuff to learn out there, that they may not be exposed to because of this schooling system.

I really haven't kept up much on the school situation but I'm aware of at least a good ammount of the issues. Are vouchers for privatly run schools being seriously talked about?
