For 7.1 Billion.... couldn't we stop all imports from places reporting infected birds, kill every chicken, goose and duck in a 100 mile radius of the infected bird and keep doing that until there were no new cases in say a year and save a couple billion?

i read an article in a popular science that was a breakdown of what would have to occur in order for the bird flu to become a human pandemic. Basically a chicken farmer would have to allready have the HUMAN flu, then become infected by a sick bird with the BIRD flu. Then the Human flu and bird flu would have to swap genes and get the combination just right in order for it to become a communicable human disease.

So needless to say it could happen but it would be a real crapshoot even if the carrier was carrying both kinds of flu.

another point worth noting is that bushy is calling for 20 million doses(i think thats what i heard) of tamiflu to be made. tamiflu is a vaccination for the known strand of bird flu. whats interesting though, is that the vaccine called for may not work, as the human to human strain would be a morph of the bird flu, so the vaccine may prove to have no efficacy with the mutated flu strain.

interesting to think about, but i don't think it will come to that anyways...

Some of your hopes (Hubb) that it's inconceivable H5N1 could mutate into a disease that’s communicable amongst humans can take some solace in the fact that 2/3's of the flu strains out there have originated in either bird or pigs. Let's not forget the still unconfirmed reports in southeast asia of human-to-human transmission either.

Combined with an estimated mortality rate of anywhere between 1% and 5% - That's 16 to 160 million dead. I don't think it's something we should be too indifferent about.

if the strain evolves h-to-h the statistical probability is that it'll happen in Asia, probably China, first. Its not going to just sneak up on us
