AMS Production Group and Texas gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman are proud to announce that the Friedman campaign’s first television advertisements will begin airing across Texas this week.
Over 600 ads featuring the new Kinky Friedman Talking Action Figure will air in five major Texas TV markets: Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Austin and El Paso. AMS Production Group, with Director Dennis Fagan at the helm, recently completed production of the television spots for the Kinky Friedman gubernatorial campaign through Minnesota-based North Woods Advertising.
Bill Hillsman of North Woods Advertising was the advertising mind behind Jesse Ventura’s 1998 populist campaign, and he hopes to mobilize Texas voters with ads that are as wildly unconventional as the candidate.
As with all things political, time was short. AMS producer Myra Spector, Director Dennis Fagan and DP Joshua Moore had just one week to bring together all of the elements that would help the Minnesota-based agency deliver its message. With flawless attention to detail, the stage was set for a mock “press conference.”
The humorous commercials feature a 13-inch Kinky Friedman Talking Action Figure at a life-sized podium answering a barrage of questions from reporters. The Action Figure features Friedman’s own voice delivering 25 of his most famous campaign sayings; "Texas has a Capitol that was built for giants, but it’s inhabited by midgets,” “I’m gonna de-wussify Texas if I gotta do it one wuss at a time,” and “I can’t screw things up any worse than they are” are some of his responses.
“Kinky brings a sense of humor and a breath of much-needed fresh air to Texas politics, and these commercials bring a breath of fresh air to Texas political advertising,” said North Woods President Bill Hillsman. “These ads were designed to create a greater sense of awareness of Kinky’s real-life campaign for Governor.” Austin-based 501 Post handled the editing, sound design and all post-production. The campaign’s deputy director, Little Jewford, is the announcer in the spots.
