What's sad is that the election that put him in office had a higher percentage of voters and more robust debate than our own 2004 election.

Yeah it's just like Saddam getting 100% of the votes one time. Regimes rig elections. And he got in through his political buddies.....not too much unlike what we had in this country a few years back.

True, but I was watching coverage of the campaigns, there was a very honest, public debate between the candidates on a level that we don't see here. In spite of the democratic absences in some areas of their system (e.g. the Supreme Council) there's a great deal of democracy and public involvement that would make the US and a number of other western democracies embarassed.

sure but when the Supreme Council eliminated all but the most hardline candidates, as they did during that election, who cares if they debate?
