Mexican Congress Votes to Legalize Small Amounts of Pot, Coke, Heroin MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Mexico's Congress approved a bill Friday that would legalize drug possession for personal use -- decriminalizing the carrying of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and even heroin. The only step remaining is the signature of the president, whose office indicates he will sign the measure, despite the implications for the war on drugs. The bill, approved by the Senate on a 53-26 vote with one abstention, had been approved earlier by the lower house of Congress. U.S. officials had no immediate reaction on what this means for the fight against drug trafficking, or the vast numbers of American students who visit Mexico on vacation. "The presidency congratulates the Congress for approving the reforms," said presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar. "This law gives police and prosecutors better legal tools to combat drug crimes that do so much damage to our youth and children." The bill legalizes possession of small amounts of heroin, cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana. "No charges will be brought against ... addicts or consumers who are found in possession of any narcotic for personal use," the bill reads. (Copyright 2006 by The Associated Press. Most leftest ideology is based upon the idea that evil is the result of social conditions/injustice, and simple misunderstandings. Man's nature is seen as both inherently good and infinitely malleable. It is believed that man can be made into something better through education and other social endeavors. The truth is that human nature is not inherently good and neither is terribly changable. Any system that denies the truth about human nature will be the victim of it. Communism is only one of the more horrific examples of this fundamental truth. I understand why you're a socialist. You want to make the world a better place. What you need to understand is that not everyone can be helped and those who can are best served by providing them with the opportunity to help themselves. |

a start in the right direction I know I know - preachnig to the choir.... but I cannot help myself from piling on prohibition - disregarding its ridiculous cost in dollars and human tragedy has been very productive at creating what it sought to prevent.... cheaper, purer and more available drugs of every stripe. One cannot repeal the laws of supply asnd demand - nor should one try to make plants illegal. (Timothy Leary called it Reagan's war on plants - kinda funny I thought) |

From what I understand, the mafia runs ALL drugs in Mexico. You cannot be just a weed dealer in Mexico without proper ties to the mafia. I wonder how this decriminalization thing ties in. A hand shake? or an attempt to crack their control? or just progressive legislation.

there was some interesting things about how countries handle their individual "war on drugs" posted on a site referenced in other threads on this board. . .I'd be interested to hear what everyone's thoughts are on those views. The site is:http://thedea.org/prohibhistory.html It starts with a history on the US prohibition on substances (wide ranging) and goes into comparing the US policies with those of other countries. It's long but IMHO interesting. I'd be curious to see what others think of it. . . (if you're bored and up for a kinda long read)

The irresponsible one's shall destroy themselves, those that can gain anything from the narcotics are going to have a field day.... Raves in Mejico are going up!!! Anyway, the policy won't work here simply because our society is not responsible enough to handle that much freedom, look at alcohol... I don't know squat about Mexican society so I'll leave it at that.

Many people in Mexico can barely afford to eat and survive, so I doubt they have cash to burn to get fucked up.

I'm pretty sure that the difference between have's and have nots is pretty great out there, but hey rich kids need to get high too.
