Steven Colbert interviews, Congressman Westmoreland about his 10 commandments bill that would make perminant display of the comandments in public buildings. He asks "what are the 10 commandments" after some studdering Westmoreland fudges out three of them before giving up.

mmmm, the genius in this bit is in the set up. he gets the guy to go on and on about why the bill and the commandments are so important. then....wait for it....wait.... "...and what are the 10 Commandments?" "don't murder. don't lie. don't steal. (pause) I can't name 'em all." although the guy looks like he laughing right along with colbert. maybe he knows what's up. either way, it makes for good tv but very bad politics. additionally, there is word going around d.c. that doing colbert's "better know a district" segment is a way to reach younger voters. there was an article about it serveral months ago that said younger staffers are urging their bosses to do the show. john |
