Police now use tracking info from toll tags

http://www.boston.com/news/local/new...track_drivers/

Since the electronic toll system was installed last summer, there have been six law enforcement requests for E-Z Pass data showing the time and place each transponder passes through a tollbooth, said Department of Transportation spokesman Bill Boynton.
Transportation Commissioner Carol Murray said the first request came from the FBI and involved a bank robbery.
The other four requests came from the Merrimack County attorney's office; the Middlesex County district attorney's office in Massachusetts; and Massachusetts State Police (two requests). Authorities did not release any more information about those cases.
Electronic data is kept for 60 days and video images of the license plates on vehicles passing through the tolls are retained for 30 days under the Transportation Department's rules, unless there is a violation. Then, they are kept longer, Murray said.

You think you have a right to privacy when you drive your car on the public roadway? Which requires permission from the state (a DL) and further - on a road where you know you 1) pay cash or 2) create a record of your coming and going?

One's expectation of privacy is fairly low on the roadway and in an auto

like it or not - that's the way it is

Not to argue the point, but afaik they take pictures of the license plate whether you pay cash or tolltag.

I dont, just posting the daily errosion of our privacy. Litterally every day there is a new piece of news adding to the pile. That means we are being watched in 365 more ways than this time last year. Big brother isnt just a story anymore, its just matter of time before it becomes reality.

They've been doing it for YEARS. BTW, they have been taking pictures of your license plate at the entry and exit points of DFW since the late 80's. That must be another sign of our police state.

New Hampshire, one of the last states on the east coast to join the E-ZPass system.
"As you can imagine, privacy issues we knew would be big. Other toll authorities told us what to expect," Murray said.
The data is exempt from the state's Right to Know Law, meaning it is not public. Information that identifies vehicles, their owners and drivers, or the E-ZPass account holder can be used only for administering the system.
"Where a citizen travels is no one's business but his own," said state Rep. Neal Kurk, R-Weare, a leading privacy advocate in the Legislature.

Even the use of toll plaza traversal to establish the location, date, and time of a person isn't new. If I recall correctly, New York divorce attorneys have used it to help establish infidelity arguments in divorce proceedings.

/me still doesn’t have a toll tag, take that “The Man”.

As long as you pay with a credit/debit card, they already have the info. I lollied big time when people whined about just the possibility of discount cards being used for targeted marketing.

well. . .mine has GPS capabilities. . . which you can choose to turn on or off. . . I'd imagine it's trackable either way.

Whenever it's on, it's location can be triangulated, it doesn't matter if it's in use or not.
