Britain 'deserves its drugs problem', says UN

Cannabis use has turned into a pandemic that is causing almost as much harm as cocaine or heroin, the head of the United Nations anti-drugs office says. He criticised governments, such as the UK's, which have downgraded the cannabis threat, saying that they have got the "drug problem they deserve".

Antonio Maria Costa, the executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, appealed to European political parties to agree a long-term strategy for reducing consumption of the drug, which he said was being used in 2004 by 164 million people worldwide. As well as being more widespread, the drug is "considerably more potent" than it was a few decades ago, he said.

Speaking at the launch of the World Drug Report in Washington, Mr Costa warned: "Policy reversals leave young people confused as to just how dangerous cannabis is. With cannabis-related health damage increasing, it is fundamentally wrong for countries to make cannabis control dependent on which party is in government.

I’ve never done heroine or crack but I know they are both horrible drugs, how can you argue with that? I work in a mental health/rehab facility.

I do agree that with some drugs such has herion or crack (Ive never done either) are obviously bad for you but if you ask the people that do them I bet they will disagree with you the death and tell you its the greatest thing in their world.

I watched my brother fuck up his life over the course of 15 years doing almost every drug I can think of. He spent 10 years worth of time in various rehabs, county and state jails, prison, and halfway houses. During this time he had a daughter that my parents have been taking care of since she was 4 months old. They took official custody of her when she was three and have had her since. My brother FINALLY quit the dope about two years ago when he got married and moved to some podunk town in Indiana and became addicted to Jesus. With the things I've seen from him and a shitload of other people over the years, as well as taking care of them when they were fucked out of their mind or coming down from their high, I can confidently say that drugs are bad with only having tried pot.

My brother = My anti-drug.

I've never done meth, but I HAVE done heroin, and let me tell you - those idiots, though they may not use the same reasoning I do, are BANG ON!

Why? Because cannabis is not given the respect it deserves, this leads people to think that it won't fuck you up and it takes them by surprise.

People KNOW heroin is gonna fuck you up, so it's easier to deal with people that are addicted to it.

So yes, in its own way, it certainly is just as dangerous. I have the same opinion of alcohol, we spend more on "drug" addiction in the UK than we do on "Alcohol" rehabilitation (yes I know they're both drugs) yet the latter affects far FAR more people and families than any of the previous bracket put together.

And as a postnote - nothing kills you unless you can't control yourself or take too much - even water and oxygen, both critical for our continued life, in excess will kil you (drowning and hyperventilation).

Drugs aren't bad, people lacking self control most certainly is.
