HP Officer Injured @ Lemmon near Toll Way

Initially, I bitched for the road being shut down, thinking it was the usual minor car accident. In actuality, the police were doing something other than directing traffic.

HIGHLAND PARK — Shots were fired in the parking lot of a supermarket Wednesday afternoon as a police officer attempted to arrest a fleeing felony suspect.

Highland Park police said an off-duty officer working at the Whole Foods Market at Lemmon Ave. and Lomo Alto Drive stopped the man after confirming that he had a warrant out for his arrest.

The officer, whose name was not released, managed to get one handcuff on the man when he started to drive away—pulling the officer along with the car.

The officer began firing at the man with his service revolver, striking him twice.

The officer's leg was run over by the car as it crashed at the side of the road.

Both the suspect and the officer were hospitalized for treatment. No other details were available.

Streets in the area of the supermarket were blocked off as police investigated the crime scene.

since when were cops allowed to arrest people when they are at their off-duty jobs? seems like the cop should've called for backup or something.

sorry that happened to him though.

"Ah, yeah, Bob? I'd really like you to come down to the bank. Yeah, that'd be great. It seems there's a guy robbing the place and I'm off duty and all"

Most metropolital areas require off duty officers to be armed and prepared to act - good police policy.

really? it seems odd to me that while walking around the grocery store this off-duty cop just happened to do a warrant check on a guy.

most off-duty cops i've seen in businesses working don't do much else besides read a magazine

Peace officers that work for any department in the state can arrest anyone they see breaking the law at any time, in any place within the state of Texas.

there's a difference between having a duty and performing it - in any event - in business - have you seen a crime perpetrated with that officer as a witness who then did nothing? If not, your point is pretty dull.

being a cop is like being a municipal soldier.

its not a 9 to 5 job even if those are your hours.

just like a doctor gives aid when needed.

cause if either of them told me they wouldn't help cause they were on vacation, coffee break, off-work, etc. they would become the embodiment of evil in my eyes.

now for #2, i'm going to have to throw a few "one could suppose"s into the mix.

one could suppose that during the last rollcall the officer attended, he was given a Watch List or some other kind of list of folks known to have outstanding felony warrants. you know like on hill street blues when they would say, "and keep an eye out for THIS guy..." that kinda thing. the car/guy matched the description.

one could suppose the suspect was acting suspicious in the whole foods. maybe the officer noticed activity that led him to believe the suspect was casing the joint out for a robbery. in that case, he would run the plates to see what comes up.

one could suppose the suspect may have commited some offense that warranted the stop in the first place. maybe he turned without signaling, maybe he was speeding, failure to yield right of way?? the list could go on. cops like to use those things that we might consider "technically, yeah that's illegal, BUT..." as a way to get the person stopped and their ID/plates run.

and finally #3, the main thing about being a police officer is they are never fully "off the clock". as xian said, if they see something happen, they are sworn to act.

anyway, i just hope that one of my "one could suppose"s come true. it would really suck to find out this all went down because the suspect got "profiled".
