WASHINGTON - President Bush cast the first veto of his 5 1/2-year presidency Wednesday, rejecting legislation to ease limits on federal funding for research on stem cells obtained from embryos.

"This bill would support the taking of innocent human life of the hope of finding medical benefits for others. It crosses a moral boundary that our society needs to respect, so I vetoed it," Bush said at a White House event where he was surrounded by 18 families who "adopted" frozen embryos that were not used by other couples, and then used those leftover embryos to have children.
"Each of these children was still adopted while still an embryo and has been blessed with a chance to grow, to grow up in a loving family. These boys and girls are not spare parts," he said.
The veto came a day after the Senate defied Bush and approved the legislation, 63-37, four votes short of the two-thirds margin needed to override. White House officials and Republican congressional leaders claimed it was unlikely that Congress could override the veto.

I don't see a problem with that. I don't think the country should be reliant solely on the gov't to do the research, but I'm not against federal funding to help the cause.

I'm not opposed to the gov't funding valuable research. Adult stem cell research has show more promise and doesn't require that a human life be created and killed to do the research.

But it's not like they're tearing the embryos out of the mother's womb to get them. The embryos are ones that would be disposed of by fertility clinics anyway.

Not necessarily. In those cases where the alternative is disposal - I agree with you. Better that some good could result rather than no good for sure. My objection is the creation of the embyos with the intent that they will be destroyed in research.

Afaik nothing in this bill is proposing anything other than using embryos that are facing desctruction.

The articles I read were not clear.


Frankly they didn't bother with what I consider to be a detail upon which the issue turns...anyway - "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! "

It is not "illegal" to do ebryonic stem cell research - that was a huge political rug pulling over the eyes of Americans. That the Federal Government doesn't fund something dosn't make it any more illegal than you (or the Feds) paying for my lunch illegal.



Anyway - any private institutiopn that want to do the research can do it - they just don't get our tax dollars to do it.

can't wait until all of the great biotech drugs are being bought from china and other country's who aren't morally confused...such bs. why would we want to stay at the forefront of biotechnology and biotech meds? seems like such a great position...
