![]() | Judge says no to TXU
i don't have a link to the story but it was on the front page of the DMN, Judge says no to TXU building their coal plants... still has to go before another board to be official but it's still nice to know that someone (the judge) doesn't have their head up their ass. TXU lied saying that them building those coal plants won't make the air quality any worse than it is already... what a fucking joke. TXU also lied about how they could lower their emissions. edit: the plants also had unsafe mercury emissions and unsafe nitrous oxide levels as well according to the story one other thing... there was a pullout in the New York Times a few months back about some new nuclear power plants that are being planned. if you can find the story online it's recommended reading for those of us who find the energy problem fascinating. it actually made me reconsider some of my thoughts concerning nuclear power.

We should create 2 nuclear plants in texas and 4 in california and have them run by the state as a non profit power. That will accomplish a ton. Force existing power companies to play fair with the consumer AND pull us out of the energy crisis that is looming.

plus, i grew up 30 minutes "down-wind" of the Shippingport nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. Believe me, not fun. extra evacuation and decontamination drills to practice in grade school, etc. Not a good vibe, nor safe. yes we need power, so lets think of a better alternative than those out there already.

![]() | No doubt. especially here in Texas ! why NOT set up a bunch of wind farms on the plains of Texas. It can't hurt.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Because it costs half a million dollars per mile to string the necessary power lines out to BFE Texas for the farms. Despite that it's happening, but that slows down the progress obviously.

1) That's communist 2) you think government contracting is corrupt now? wait until a multibillion dollar nuclear reactor gets built and watch the graft pile high. 3) existing power companies, though deregulated, do play fair. You have options as to whom to buy from. The way to decrease the cost of power with static to increasing demand is to increase the supply of it.... Anyway - you more general idea of building a large number of nuclear plants is the clear direction to go. | |

I do agree that letting the state take over power plants is a BAD idea, just having the city in charge of our power here is fucking us out of at least $75 a month I could save by picking another supplier.

right now nuclear counts as 20% of our nation's power and since nuclear plants have a certain shelf life and if you add on the fact that no new nuclear plants have been built for awhile... once those plants go through their term, if we don't have something to pick up the slack then we will see a sharp drop off in production. so the story in the NYT was basically saying that right now is the best time for power companies to build nuclear plants because people are more willing to forget about the previous accidents when faced with the fact that we will have a sharp drop off in production if we don't figure something out. as far as wind and sun... unfortunately those aren't very viable options right now as far as money goes, just like dionysis said. i like the options where they work well though, it'd be nice in a perfect world to be able to support all of our power needs through natural means (wind, water, sun) right now it appears as though there is no perfect option, i just think that i'd rather go with the nuclear option right now than go with the dirty coal option... and i refuse to listen to people talking about clean coal because i think that's all bullshit. in the end though i cannot wait for scientists to figure out how to harness the power from nuclear fusion rather than fission though.
