There are conspiracy theories because our gov't chooses not to disclose all of our classified information to the media, which is a good choice. There's no question there were mistakes made by various agencies, and failures in coordination between many of the departments, which is why we setup a 9/11 commission.. but claiming that a large group of Americans (or Dick Cheney for that matter) secretly planned the attacks is just ludacris and I have not seen any real evidence of that other than what some wacky professor says in his book.

this is a description from wiki.... not a defense of the coup

If it quacks like a duck...

I don't get what is so horrible about that. To me it only shows a complete lack of confidence in our system to oppose those policies in another country.

I'm not terribly familiar with the events in Chile but I'd guess that some of the arguments ran like this....

American (and other foreign investors) Business interests: hey we've just dumped millions and millions into the economy and infrastructure to mine copper and this cat's going to declare it property of the state.

One could well argue that nationalization of land, industry etc is blatant theft from those who built those industries and own the land.

yeah...the increase in put options on United stock was because of an impending labor dispute judgment everyone thought was going to end badly for the airlines, if I recall correctly.

Let's not forget it should be viewed in the larger context of the cold war. So should about 70% of Porkchop's list.

Absolutely true. That explains why we often made the decisions we made. It doesn't mean we didn't support some brutal assholes as a result. Some one recently wrote about the "but he's our sonovabitich" notion and commented that what we really failed to deal with was the fact that at the end of the day he was still a sonovabitch. The author argued that our failure wasn't the initial support of the sonovabitch but our subsequent failure to push him toward a more responsible government and away from brutal authortarianism. Now, that is of course an over simplification and each sonovbitch would need a case by case discussion but the general notion holds true.

No, he was a mini-Castro coming to power in the middle of the cold war.

That is not what I said, nor meant nor believe Satchel.

I'd suggest you reread what I wrote and grab your magnifying glass. When you find any hint of approval get back to me. Until then I'd note that I was simply offering an explanation as to why people would find Allende's seizure's of other people's property horrible (in answer to your question.*) Theft is objectionable to most Satchel. The appropriate response is debateable but the fact that his seizures gave cause to be upset is not.

I'd then ask yopu to read my next post where I noted again that our policy of supporting strong men as long as they were anti-communist was often a failure.
