The politics of the Karl Rove era were designed to distract and divide the very people who would ordinarily be rebelling against the deterioration of their way of life. Working Americans have been repeatedly seduced at the polls by emotional issues such as the predictable mantra of "God, guns, gays, abortion and the flag" while their way of life shifted ineluctably beneath their feet. But this election cycle showed an electorate that intends to hold government leaders accountable for allowing every American a fair opportunity to succeed.

A Democrat (and Senator elect to boot) writing an op-ed piece claiming Rove is a nasty cat. Get out of here Nando. You can't be serious ... no... a Dem doesn't like Rove Hell, GOPers don't like Rove. Anyway, the author is making the essentially same argument as the Author of What's Wrong with Kansas or some such title. It argues that Kansas voted Red to its economic detriment and therefore voted illogically. What it ignores is that people don't vote strictly by their wallet and that less tangible issues (in that case abortion was iirc the hot button) count and often times more than $$$. The author, imo, misread the election results as a turning awat from that theme toward the notion of voting one's pocket book. He is spot on with the notion of holding elected officials accountable. As for this election cycle - it showed that the electorate are pissed off at the Bush policies and the GOP but that they are not happy with the far left either. Those dems who beat incumbant GOPers looked much more like Blue Dog Dems than Pelosi Dems.
