this is a very interesting 30 min documentary about how recycling is actually bad for the environment. I never knew how bad recycling really is.. wow

It seems to make sense that it pollutes the earth more to turn the recycled goods back into raw products. I also didn't know that land fills trap methane gas and turn it into electricity. That one landfill provided electricity for over 60,000 people. What's everyone elses thoughts on this topic?

yeah, the video really makes sense, I've just never given it much thought about the wasted energy in the recycling process. I knew about the methane gas landfills trapped, there is a landfill in the town I grew up in. Next to the highway there is always a blue flame from this bigass torch from burning off the extra gas.

Turning stuff BACK to its original form does indeed sometimes take (at least) the same energy it does to make it in the first place. However, as we see with the methane traps, you have to gear up your waste service to benefit from it. Most of the methane in landfill sites is just left to dissipate in to the atmosphere. However, recycling isn't just about turning things back in to their original state. When people in europe recycle glass bottles (mostly from beer) they aren't melting them down and remaking them, they are just cleaning them and sending them back to the brewers. The same applies for plastic bottle in many cases aswell. So, that is quite a one-sided study, the generalisation that "recycling is bullshit" is, tbh, bullshit. Some parts are, sure, but not all. And the overall idea of recycling is a good one, even if the implementation (as with many things) isn't yet perfected.

Plastic bottles are only approved for 1 use by the FDA. I've seen studies that show using plastic bottles more than once can secrete toxic chemicals into whatever you put back into the bottle. Oh and what was your friends name from Pampa?

The extra methane that isnt needed for bio-diesel production is collected and sold or burned to make electricity at the citys power plant. Its a system that is working out extremely well for Denton, and if Kinky had been elected it would have become a statewide sytem. Instead I guess we are getting Rick Perrys Coal plants

Even if we assume everything in the show is true, there's still a lot they left out: 1. Although the paper could decompose to provide methane for the generators (which I support) there's still a matter of the glass (which is melted back down to create new glass products or used to create other products) that they didn't address. 2. The metal saved from recycling, especially at the scrap metal industry level, is reused very effectively. Metals are not renewable, and the more we throw away, the less we have available for products from here on out. 3. The plastic recycled into other products may cost more money but offsets the oil and other materials used to create plastic and other synthetics. Those original materials are also not renewable resources. 4. Most of the drawbacks to recycling come from problems that originate in our first-use packaging models. Most of our product packaging is not meant to be reused or recycled. Other modern nations (e.g. European nations) package products with minimal packaging and/or packaging that is meant to be reused. For example, in Europe soda comes in glass bottles which are returned for a deposit, transfered back to the manufacturers, washed, and reused. There are no concerns about the breakdown of glass, and as a result fewer new bottles must be created. If we followed a similar model, this entire issue would be much less of a concern. 5. As far as the paper goes, it may not be a great idea to create new pulp from old paper, but there are many reuses for paper that produce less waste and less cost (e.g. shredding the paper to create packaging materials as opposed to using styrofoam or bubble wrap.
