With complete support of Mayor Philip Mathewson, the proposal has received favor from the vast majority of residents. If this ordinance is enacted, Serena Chen, policy director of the American Lung Association of California, stated she believes it would be the strictest proposal in the world. Could this open the door for more cities to follow? If so, what rights are we left with when we can't choose what we do in our own homes? That says to me they're targeting apartments, not houses. Townhomes & condos too I guess. I think it's going too far, but I also have to live in an apartment that smells like smoke right now due to the previous tenant and it fucking sucks.

thats freakin bs. Our rights are slowly but surely being plucked right out from underneath us.. I'm not going to let anyone tell me what I can or can't do inside my own house. I wouldnt' be surprised if they started a law like that here in oregon you can't even smoke inside bars here.

My question is, how far are they going to take it? You already can't smoke inside of most buildings in CA. If this passes, how long until they decide that smoking on your balcony is harmful to your neighbors and ban it? Then where do the smokers go?

i cannot believe that, as a smoker i dont and never have in my home but for somebody to tell me what i can do in my own home would be a lawsuit waiting to happen.Before i moved to the USA they said this was the land of the free..

They are going to take it as far as they are allowed to by the voters. Fact is the tables have turned and non-smokers now represent over 75% of the voters so any anti-smoking legislation is sure to pass a vote. If more smokers dont get out and vote or band together and lobby politicians these types of laws will continue.

I can definately see smoking being illegal within my lifetime if the smokers dont get together and stand up for themselves at the voting booth.

I haven't seen the CO law so I won't comment towards that, but I can imagine the support for a law like this will drop precipitously if they try to include single-family homes. Then again, people have already been giving up a bunch of their rights to Homeowners Associations regarding the exterior of their houses, so maybe people aren't as protective of these rights as I give them credit for.

btw this is the land of the free. The people voted those smoking bans into effect(at least the ones involving clubs/bars), and the people in these communities have a chance to bitch at the HOA board every week before it gets passed. At least generally speaking, that's how the HOAs work. Every HOA is different.

Although I can see your logic due to all of the new laws, etc. I would have to disagree because the incredible revenue of the business, political connections with lobbyists, etc,etc.


Seems kind of weird to think about though...... that there are so many laws being made against something so prominent in the economy.


Now before anyone jumps me, I have not done any current research for statistics in reference to tobacco and our country, but I know it's up there.

and Audri, you actually did read the extended link, and the reasoning behind this actual law has some merit... but I think what people are more urked about, is just the basic "Someone telling you, you can and cannot do certain things in the privacy of your own home." Like if you owned your own full sized big house, and someone tried to tell you, that you cannot smoke a fag in it.

and you can't smoke in some public area's like in santa monica downtown shopping district as well as other locations through socal.

there was a prop that was shot down by the public this recent election, that would of added a reported $ 2.60 tax on packs of cigs.

oh yea, and i think they were trying to pass a law that would prohibit smoking in a car that had children in it as well. im all for that one.
