Why Africa you ask??

oil.

Oil in Sudan

The U.S has to get there before China does.

This article states the TRUE reasoning behind this.

Quote:
The impending announcement that the Department of Defense will create a separate regional command to focus on Africa is a good first step in helping to secure American interests on the resource-rich continent, now hotly-contested territory in the war on terrorism.
What "rich resources" do the mean? People or Oil?

Quote:
Africa's vast mineral wealth is a critical part of America's economic future. Already we import some 15 percent of our annual oil requirements from Africa, which also possesses vast supplies of gold, diamonds, and rare minerals used in the production of the computers and communications equipment that fuel our economy. Seeking these resources, China has increasingly developed its economic investments and fostered new relationships with the warlords and dictators that control access to them.
First the human resources from Africa were needed to fuel the economy in the past and now even more than ever in this technological age Africa is still the SOURCE.

Give "humanitarian" aid, while the US(and other "developed" nations) steal and plunder resources from them to prop up their economies without "developing" the infastructure of the nation(s) supposedly lent a helping hand.

The issue of genecide in Sudan is a side issue to get the American investments/corporate interests latched onto those precious resources... all done with the help of the military.

Gotta keep the empire running...

Funny(not funny haha, but interesting) note: in the mid-90s, Bin Laden was a poor farmer in Sudan...especially after the Sudanese gov't took back all the land they gave him in exchange for the work his construction company did.

Funny, not haha, but interesting... As I understood it - when OBL got booted from Sudan he got royally fleeced and bent over a chair by the Sudanese gov't. There was even a suggestion that he was on the cusp of turning toward just being a gentleman farmer in the Sudan but for American insistence that he be expelled (I think that a stretch but the argument passes, imo, the giggle test)... anyway.... interesting even if not all that important or relevent

He was considering leaving/disbanding Al-Qaeda at one point during his stay in Sudan, but ultimately decided otherwise. There's a reason AQ went quiet for a couple years after Yousef bombed the WTC, and it wasn't because they were hiding. Bin Laden was seriously contemplating becoming a farmer on the ~1million acres the Sudanese gov't had given him as payment for construction work. The expulsion didn't come until after he had decided to continue doing the AQ work(and yes, the US was actively behind expelling him from Sudan. They even suggested Afghanistan as his destination). But yes, you are correct that the Sudanese gov't fleeced him on a level most mobsters would be proud of.

So then the story I heard was mostly accurate... any info on what swayed him to stick it out and kill people instead of feed them?

It basically boils down to 2 things:
1)Zawahiri's influence
2)American soldiers' permanent bases in Saudi Arabia.
