When we knew he was Afghanistan, we hardcore pressured the government to hand him over, when they refused to cooperate, BAM, regime change. So then, he runs to Pakistan, with whom we are relatively friendly, and they give us no significant effort to find him, and our military goes to Iraq? I know this is really HAWTALTA, but what's going on?

actually i think they already caught him, and are using the fact that "he is still at large" to keep troops over there.. i mean come on.. if they can find Saddam in a hole.. they surely have found Osama...

The first part isn't entirely true. We pressured them to turn him over, and the Taliban (who were still friends at this point) actually agreed to turn him over provided the US provide a little evidence that he was actually behind 9/11. This was such an offense to the administration that communication ceased and the plans to invade were approved.

But you look at those events, even aside from my edit, and you tell me what you think that says. I think it tells a clear picture about where priorities really are, how serious the "war on terror" really is, and what it's being used to legitimize.

Wrong. OBL's been cut off from his family and denounced by the ruling party and his passports have been revoked since the mid-90s. There were a couple times in the 90s in which he could have gone back to Saudi Arabia if he recanted his writings publicly, but he refused to do so. Bin Laden isn't related to the royal family by blood at all. In fact, his father was a poor oil worker for years until he started his construction company. His family is royalty only in the sense that they're royally loaded, and OBL's been cut off from those funds for a decade now. He actually had to have layoffs in Al-Qaeda in the late 90s because he couldn't pay all his people.

We weren't friends with the Taliban at all, really, at least not at the time of 9/11. Mullah Omar & OBL were thick as thieves by the time 9/11 rolled around. Omar had agreed with SA at one point to keep OBL quiet and even had an oral agreement to hand him over to the Saudis in the late 90s, but at one point OBL pledged loyalty to Omar and Omar changed his mind. From that point on, Omar actively helped OBL stay hidden from the world.

Adam, have you had a chance to read 'The Looming Tower'? I think you would be interested in it, it goes into quite a lot of detail about the rise of OBL & AQ.

they were all poor until the 20th century, and don't think that just because they have been cut off on paper, there not still part of the family, and fully protected. You gotta have one crazy MF to stir the pot.
