Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich acknowledged he was having an extramarital affair even as he led the charge against President Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair.

I'm not so certani he'll fail... he's got some pretty ugly skeletons that he'll need to overcome to be sure. However, he's as wonkish as they get and he has a way of exlpaining his point that makes issues and analysis for reaching conclusions reached readily accessible... now, reasonable people may disagree on the courses of action those conclusions suggest but there's none of this GW adrift without explanation bullshit. That will attract a lot fo center right (and further right) voters. Not so certain how it'll play in Peoria.
