You misunderstood what I said. We do pollute. Pollution is bad. We must do less of it and clean our environment more. That is fact and not subject to debate.
However, the extent to which climate variations are a result of human activity IS debateable. It would seem pretty close to absurd to think we have no effect. But accepting that we do have effect that in no way means that we are the prime cause of any measurable climate change. Nor, most importantly, have I ever read of any agreement (or anything even resembling a rasonable consensus) on how much impact we have and how much we need to change our behavior to effect what change. If some one could reasonably answer this question, "if we ceased all human behavior of all kinds tomorrow, what would be the impact on the climate in the next 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 100, 10,000 years?" I'd accept the prognoses that we're going to be canoeing through the streets of NYC in 100 years more credibly.

Because it is a panacea for those who believe that government control is the sollution to the world's problems. Every aspect of life can be argued to have a direct bearing on the issue and as it has direct bearing to the issue can be subject to gov't regulation.
