Since he let the several stations remain which were in opposition of him remain on, it is only fair that he have his own station. Those TV stations were, in part, responsible, and were the biggest instrument in getting the US led coup off the ground. He has a state sponsored station, which he uses to inform his people, not hide from them. What is bad about that? A leader who can actually answer questions which aren't already pre-determined sounds better than a bumbling town drunk.

Chavez being a force for democracy sounds better than forced democracy. Iraq anyone?

How exactly did he seize control of the media? There are several stations that are anti-chavez 24/7 in Venezuela, so I would hardly call that taking control.


Here is what the gov't was at least forced to admit so far with the evidence continually mounting against the CIA's invovement.

Chavez has a few years in him with his petro dollars. But, because he nationalized the oil industry he'll get no private investment and expansion and improvement in production. The only way to increase revenue is to hope the price per barrell goes up. So, his oil revenues are pretty much peaked and will only go down from here... his communist economy discourages foreign investment and encourages local capital (in terms of dollars and human captial) to leave. Communism simply plunders the available resources - it does not develope them. As the resources and revenues dwindle his police state will become more brutal and more of a nightmare. Defend the cat all you want but the model is well understood.

He had good reasoning for shutting down that particular station. It intentionally slanted the events leading up and during the CIA's attempted coup. I'd say trying to overthrow your gov't is a good reason for getting shut down.

Don't equate reporting with actively attempting a coup because its specious. So, "slanting events." Does this mean you and your buddy Hugo regarded their coverage as non-sympathetic to Chavez? Even hostile? If so, then hell yeah. If I'm a dictator I'm shutting that fucking station down post haste. However, in a functioning democracy the media gets to be as biased as they want to be.
