There was a really good article about this in Wired like 6 months ago, showing how they used LEDs and IR to design a simple yet effective multi-touch coffee table.

While it is impractical for personal use, the Commercial use is limitless.
And It's not so much that you couldn't do this with existing technology, but the ease and convenience of using this technology could really make things much more convenient and efficient for our society. Whether it is using Surface or some variant that will no doubtedly come about from this.

The T-Mobile store implement will be pretty bad ass, but this thing could be used for tradeshows, filing taxes, comparing service plans, creating a la cart service plans, anything that requires tailoring or customizing...

Advanced Kiosks:
mall directory, could give you walking directions to nearest bathroom or store.

Provided you have a vcard or some standard xml format for contact info, you can auto fill out portions of any form, contest entries, pulling order history,

Applications also supply chain management from any point in the supply chain.
I ordered product XYZ to be delivered to this store, locate where it is in the supply chain, maybe re-route your logistics based on factors that could pose obstacles in your supply chain.

Could be used in public utilities, city zoning maps, utility grids, identifying brownouts, mark possible re-routing, handling dispatches.

And of course tie this to GPS and you could drag and drop service request to the nearest technicians in an area or compare the service load of each technician to determine would is best apt to handle the request.

point, click, drag, drop, done. Not a bad deal really.

I would hope they would have it all covered, but think about the joy that would cause if there is an issue with the seal or dead pixels. Have fun returning THAT to the store.

they are promoting this type of interface at the convention in Las Vegas as touch-screen devices placed throughout your house to control various appliances from various locations... also available via remote access via broadband

Keyboards are going to be a thing of the past in our lifetime. Apple has a huge stack of multi touch patent applications, as well as Microsoft, HP, LG, etc. Every consumer product manufacturer in the world is working on next gen interfaces that will replace the keyboard and mouse.

Touch screens aside, I can't until there is a commecially viable breakthrough with non-invasive direct neural interfacing.
