I felt the same way until I saw the episode of Top gear where they smash one of those tiny little Smart cars into a brick wall at 90mph. The car just bounced off the wall a bit, you could even still open the doors after the crash and the crash test dummy readout reported only concussion and bruises would have happened to a real human.

I cant find the clip anymore but here is a video of one being crashed into a concrete wall at 70mph with the same results:

They finished all the safety trials in Germany with high ratings, but of course that says nothing about the US. The US is pretty good about failing cars, like the Mercedes Smart Car for it's potential to flip, so I don't realitically envision being able to purchase one in the US anytime soon. Although the loremo is more sturdy than steel frame cars, and has outperformed most cars in the German safety trials, the US will probably peg it for not meeting minimum weight requirements or some other obscure metric.

They begin mass production of the vehicle in 2009, but there are no plans yet for NA distribution. The current plans are focused on European, Asian and African markets.

Safety tests show that larger vehicles, particularly trucks and suvs, are generally less safe than smaller cars.

Yeah, judging by how that door sounded when he opened it I doubt it'd fair well in a side-impact collision.

100000 miles / 50 mpg * 3$ per gallon = 6000$

Now your more expencive car

A net savings of 4000$? No because you spent 18000$ vs 2500$ for a net lose of 11500$. This is not even factoring in the higher taxes, licencing and insurance of the more expencive car.

This 2500$ won't pass US safety tests. When a large SUV hits a sub compact, its game over for the compact. Highschool physics experiment for you. place a tennisball on top of a basketball and drop them together, touching. IF you do it right the lighter tennis ball should shoot up higher than the point you dropped it from. It has the biggest change in momentum. If this happens to people in a mini car, they will get whiplash and shit like that. The danger in driving an SUV is rollover from the higher center of gravity, and that most people driving them have more money than common sence. (so being stupid doesn't really help your safe driving).

For straight up economics between the two, that's all well good and all, but I doubt the Tata will have the same features that appeal to me in the Loremo. Even if it does, I'm gonna have to go with the less goofier looking of the two, that's just my vanity speaking.

However, you can't deny comparing either of these two cars to traditional ones on the road today in terms of economics.

smarts are supposed to be here Q2 2008.

they have done numerous tours through dallas over the past year. i believe you can preorder through an MB dealer... but for sure i know you can place a deposit for a ticket in line through the smart network.

Smart cars are a go for the States. I had to talk my wife out of trading her car in for one. Q2 is right. You can customize and order it online. It's a nice buy for a single urban person with no kids or no need to drive long distances on an interstate. If you have any need to transport anything more than groceries over a distance that requires you to drive on an interstate, this is not the car for you. Try passing a big truck in a stiff cross wind.
