France may "breathalyze" clubs

Say goodbye to the "good ol' days" if something like this ever passes in the US... not to mention how much biz the bars would lose.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7395401.stm

Quote:
France's cabinet is to hear a proposal to make breathalysers mandatory at late-night clubs and cafes from this summer when it meets on Monday.

The ecology and health ministers are due jointly to present a draft decree that applies to all such establishments remaining open until 0200.

Some 350 cafes and bars in western France have already run trials, Ecology Minister Jean-Louis Borloo said.

The move comes after a weekend of road accidents, some alcohol-related.

The Pentecostal holiday weekend saw at least 17 deaths in seven accidents, AFP news agency reports.

"Health Minister Roselyne Bachelot and I will present a decree to make electronic breathalyser tests obligatory in drinking establishments open until 0200 so that everyone can check their level, their condition upon leaving," Mr Borloo said on the France 2 television channel.

"I hope that by this summer, it will be obligatory in all such places."

In one of the weekend's worst accidents, four people aged between 15 and 26 were killed when the car they were in went off the road near Forbach, in eastern France.

Police said the 36-year-old driver, who survived, had been drinking.

sure a cab is better than that... a cab is better than lots of bad choices. None of which have anything to do with the shitty cab service in Dallas.

doesnt seem so bad to me, all it is doing is offering a service to customers, it doesnt say that it is manditory to use on your way out. but if there was a breathalizer avaliable to use to check if you had too much to drink i think it would benifit those people who use it. there are some bars in arizona that i have been to that have them. they cost a quarter to use and they have big signs saying that they are not liable if it shows you are ok to drive and then you get a dui or in an accident.

not sure if it is still true but many states banned breathalyzer machines, particularly those that gave an actual number for a read out (as opposed to green, yellow, red) because it was argued to encourage people to compete to see who could get the highest score

I was about to say the same thing. This is a GOOD idea, not a bad one. From what i can tell, it's just making it so that all bars are required to provide the device/service should a patron desire it.
Might possibly create a rash of alcohol related hospital visits due to frat boys trying to see how drunk they can get as well.

This article was not clear on that. It's not very well written if this is the case. Subsequent research makes it clearer. I'd still like to see the bill itself though.

The point is, technically, if you are drunk at a bar you are breaking the law. So if you are required to take a breathalyser and you are drunk, there could be a nice policeman waiting outside to haul your ass to detox for 12 hours or write you a ticket, even if you aren't driving.
