Also Tuesday, Russian soldiers took about 20 Georgian troops prisoner at a key Black Sea port in western Georgia, blindfolding them and holding them at gunpoint, and commandeered American Humvees awaiting shipment back to the United States.
The move comes as a small column of Russian tanks and armored vehicles left the strategic Georgian city of Gori in the first sign of a Russian pullback of troops from Georgia after a cease-fire intended to end fighting that reignited Cold War tensions. The two countries on Tuesday also exchanged prisoners captured during their brief war.

A FOX News crew on the ground in Georgia described the Russians as "crack and combat ready."

Along with the soldiers, the Russian troops also took away a container holding U.S. military property: Five U.S. military regular humvees and one armored humvee, according to Alan Middleton, CEO of Poti Sea Port. They had been used in a military exercise recently in Georgia involving U.S. and Georgian troops and were being shipped back to a European base.

It is unclear whether the Georgians seized had anything to do with the container.

The deputy head of Russia's general staff, Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, said Russian forces plan to remain in Poti until a local administration is formed, but did not give further details. He also justified previous seizures of Georgian soldiers as necessary to crack down on soldiers who were "out of any kind of control ... acting without command."

this is the path we've gone down and we need to accept it

we need to go ahead and put Russia in it's place while at the same time pwning Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and anywhere else we feel like there is injustice happening.

we are the greatest civilization this world has ever known and we have to accept our role as the world's protectors because if it wasn't for us this whole world would go to shit.

If anything happens it'll be with NATO coalition of forces. The Europeans aren't liking this one bit and this is in their backyard. I doubt a full scale war will come of it unless the Russians try to get really silly. I don't know though, the pipeline and having a beach head for the west to spy on them seems like high stakes for Russia at a time when Putin is really trying to become an international player.

umalak, Its people like you that start 90% of all wars.

Honestly, since it doesn't sound like there were any Americans in the humvees, I don't think this is a major foul. It could turn into one though. This whole thing seems like a way to keep America committed to a war zone in the middle east even if Obama gets elected. Really china's economy is better than ours right now. They are closer and have way more man power.

I'm tired of world politics pulling on my heart strings. There are none left to pull after bush.

Its clear that America supports Georgia. Actually let me put it in a more realistic sense. Big country founds small country to start something that the big country wont.

Similar scenario as Kosovo. Except Serbia is not Russia.

Furthermore, Poland is the next little fish we will keep in our pond. But be careful as that pond is slowly drying out.

I've never trusted the Russians... not during or after the cold war...

I think Putin wants a return of the old times... That dude obviously misses his old cushy KGB position...

I'm not for sure about war just yet... but defintely certain we have been engaged in a new type of cold war...

There's some tin foil out there that supposes the collapse of the USSR was just an elaborate hoax to throw the west off.

I don't know of any conflicts we've gotten in with former superpowers because of a few missing humvees. Nothing short of them directly attacking our people will provoke any military action on our part. imho.

I'm not one to tune in to that tinfoil frequency but I remember hearing those musings back during the 90s as well. The hilarity to all that is 1) that is a hell of a pretense to work up, 2) a hell of a pretense to keep working for almost a DECADE (remember the unrest socially and FINANCIALLY that they have suffered in all sectors), and 3) a hell of a pretense to try to reel back in without drawing HUGE suspicion.

Letting the nukes go, dismembering their fleets, and overall kowtowing to the Western demands is totally against the old Russia MO, so while it makes for great laughs, I (like you) place no stock in that.

If they show up with a Metal Gear, I'll gladly eat my words, though.

Like I said in the other thread on this topic Russia has the natural gas supply leverage to split NATO on the issue. We have G-8, WTO, NATO-Russia Joint Council and the fact that Putin's billions have to cycle through the west as leverage. So far our NATO allies have been timid at best.

Nations don't go to war (or have it thrust upon them rather) when they exhibit strength. They get it when they exhibit weakness in the face of some one looking to take. Putin is looking to take and NATO looks weak.

Still, Russia really can't compete with us - yet. If we permit this abuse he'll do it again and each time it'll be harder to push back. We should put troops in Ukraine as a message that we're not going to let Russia gobble up democratic states of the "near abroad"
