No, I've tried to engage you on that and show you why you're wrong and you, with all your legal education, respond that I don't know what I'm talking about because some blogger with opinions and credentials like yours agrees with you. Short version - we've discussed them in specificity and you lost on the merits. So you resort to vague, vapid vulgar assertions you otherwise cannot back up.

I didn't "blame" Clinton. I said he cut our troops strenth in half and that if we had more troops present retention issues could have been eased. You blamed Rummsfeld. Frankly, I think you're largely right about Rumsfeld. He did think he could do it on the cheap w/too few troops. I'm saying retention problems would not have been as bad with more of them to rotate in even w/Rumsfeld's error.

as far as this issue goes i actually agree with xian concerning his comment about Bush/McCain supporting this bill... they didnt support an aspect of the bill not the spirit of the bill.

but as far as i can tell, the aspect they didnt support is still there and yet Bush has now said he supports it... so he changed his mind i guess

your are right xian, retention is important right now. I do think the passing it on to others will help some, it would be pretty nice to keep the insurance and get your kid/wife/husband a free ride. I guess they could also have it to have a chance to go to officer training if they wanted to stay in the military, but I think that is a given if you stay for 20 years.

That door has at least historically been open... my brother did a tour as a non-com in the Navy came out finished his degree and went back in. DOR'd from a flight school, went non-designated, then Rummy fired the whole lot of Navy non-desigs.... and he went back in full time active reserve (not sure if he's back in regular or not no frankly) and he's been in for the last shit 10 years or so... he was on the Carl Vinson in 2003 when they were qualifing a flight wing and got called to NK then Afganistan and were a part of the largest sortie mission and duration at sea in naval hx - 9 months (at least up until that time... may still be a record).

One of the problems with the military is that it is so huge and rigid that it makes custom tailoring very difficult. You've heard, right way, wrong way, Navy way. I don't claim to have clue one how to fix any of that but offering a greater variety of enlistment and commission option would seem a good idea. Hell, my bros current job is enlistment officer - I should ask him - lol

Anway, we ask so much from our soldiers, sailors marines etc that we should provide for them well and make service an attractive option.

ask your bro, I love to hear about what they go through. there is a huge beetle in my house right now and it will sleep in my nose I swear it...but back to the topic, yes I totally agree. I don't know if I am getting old and agreeing with you because my ideals changed or if it's just common sense, either way I really hope the for the best for all our enlisted personal and the fucking people that have the unfortunate luck to live there right now...even though building a country sounds kind of neat minus the ethnic cleansing and drill torture.
