![]() | What Bush Got Right
any of you read this story yet? i don't have a link because i have the hard copy. you can try googling it though. written by Fareed Zakaria, whom I respect and I dont know why anyone on here wouldn't, in the new Newsweek magazine.

This article was ok. Just talked about how Bush has changed direction on some policies outside the major bitching points.

and it's ironic in what way? because you have made two comments about me today which were both way off the mark. not sure what you think you know about me but you're way off so far.

My personal fave "right" thing Bush recently did: http://www.military.com/news/article...ill-today.html President Bush today signed legislation ushering in a new era in GI Bill benefits. NOW I get to finish my degree for FREE! |

Its not free to her either if she served in the military. It is payment for her commitment to help defend our country. Tricky, the issue McCain had with the Bill wasn't with extending benefits to our soldiers. To think that he would not wish to benefit our servicemen and women is just outside the realm of reason. His issue was that drafting the Bill in a way that encouraged senior NCOs to leave the military was harmful to the enlisted ranks because it robbed them of core leadership. Core leadership that helped keep more combat troops alive when faced with dangerous situations because of that experience and leadership. His thought was saving soldiers lives and invigorating the health and strength of our national defense which in turn saves not just American lives but the lives of millions on people across the planet that our military keeps safe by discouraging otherwise greedy, aggressive despots (eg - KJI) at bay. To characterize his position, as you have, as anti-soldier is an overly simplified characterization. | |

![]() | yeah, it seems since the departure of Greenspan and his subsequent candid remarks on federal spending, Bush has had a stick up his ass to curtail it as much as possible. Wouldn't say Bush and definitely McCain are against the troops getting benefits.

NCO retention was already a HUGE problem with various MOSs. Heck, I was offered $10k and a promotion if I reenlisted before I got out. I heard from an old buddy that it's up to $15k now. The problem now is, no one wants to stick around after being deployed 3-4 times in the space of 4 years.

So what they did is instead of giving civilians huge sign on bonuses for joining they're now giving college benefits. Therefore (they hope) more intelligent people will join the military because trust me when I say... we have more people on an 8th grade reading level in the Army then you'd think.
