The UAW contracts in Michigan are burdensome but even more are the deals that pay people not to work and even more than that are the pensions. The pensions however will be paid one way or another. If not by Ford and GM then by the tax payer...see...http://www.pbgc.gov/

deals that pay people not to work? i didn't hear him mention that. i did hear him mention how they ask govt workers to take an additional day off, without pay, per week though.

I was referring to uaw contracts not Arnold's speach. Yes, there are provisions that pay people not to work. Pretty good work if you can find it huh?

ok, you're going to have to explain where you're coming from here... Arnold is the Governor of California... this is a post about what he was speaking about on This Week and he didn't mention Michigan or UAW that I heard... so why are you replying about it here?

The auto workers in the most trouble are in Michigan. The Automakers to be rescued are in Michigan.

His point is that labor costs inflate the cost of the final product to such a degree that it cannot be competitive with other auto makers. He is right. General labor is not worth $75/hr on the free market. If I made cars there's no way in hell I'd build a plant in Michigan and I'd be hard pressed to consider the US at all. Transportation costs off setting cheaper labor over seas means I'd build my plant there.

I agree that the auto industry was crippled by excessive labor costs (not exclusively but even with a better product they'd have thin margins)
