Obama said he'd bankrupt companies that wanted to build coal burning plants.

If you want WV to stay bankrupt eliminate the market for their resources.

North Dakota mined coal and it is ecologically just fine. Its entirely possible to mine responsibly. In fact the national land reclamation policy is based on the North Dakota policy of returning the land to the way it was before the minerals were taken out.

We do not want to halt progress.

We do not plan to be selfish and say “North Dakota will not share its energy resource.”

No, we simply want to insure the most efficient and environmentally sound method of utilizing our precious coal and water resources for the benefit of the broadest number of people possible.

And when we are through with that and the landscape is quiet again, when the draglines, the blasting rigs, the power shovels and the huge gondolas cease to rip and roar!

And when the last bulldozer has pushed the last spoil pile into place, and the last patch of barren earth has been seeded to grass or grain, let those who follow and repopulate the land be able to say, our grandparents did their job well.

The land is as good and, in some cases, better than before.

Only if they can say this will we be worthy of the rich heritage of our land and its resources.

They mine coal there now (wv) and ARE bankrupt. Just go there, place is a wasteland. And I will not prop up bad industries just to keep jobs. That is a foolish move, but understandable that you'd support it since you think the government has no place in education or retraining workers.

I'm stating a simple fact. If Obama chooses to pursue a policy that denies any new coal burning facilities then WV will have an even more depressed economy because they cannot sell a resource than many in the state rely upon for their livelihood.

The role of the gov't in the economy should be limited. Helping to foster an environment where jobs are created. It is then up to the individual to go find them. Certainly not easy today.

Why is the mayor or Arlington in DC lobbying for some loan or bailout for the automakers to protect the GM factory in Arlington and all the jobs it supports?

You're right, individual jobs aren't the concern of the gvt, industries are. It's a local issue, the state should be looking for new areas and start providing incentives for those industries to (re)locate to their area.
