that reasoning is pure bs btw. it had nothing to do with "getting back" for his dad. it was purely economical. they needed to get the Freidman economic school of thought in somewhere over there hoping it would turn the region and bring them on the world market like every other region in the world. that area was the last hold out and that's why we went in. (the main one at least)
Iraq was a good target... openly defying UN sanctions, still topical from the first gulf war, etc.

just saying the comment about bush sr isn't the real reason.

No to mention, ousting Saddam was a Clinton policy too. He just never had a viable excuse nor an exit strategy so it never happened.

More than just that.... openly defying their cease fire agreement, bribing the hell out of UN officials and gov't officials throughout the world and actively engaged in a low level hot war. The second gulf war wasn't the beginning of new hostilities as much as it was the drastic escalation of current hostilities. Whether it was justified is a matter of opinion but that GW wanted "revenge" is the realm of juvenile thinking.

Beyond the justification of war with Iraq it represented a target that it was hoped could be quickly pacified and turned around. That was perhaps possible had the planning not gone so far south so soon after the war w/Saddam's army was over. The subsequent destruction of large swaths of infrastructure that were necessary for that rapid turn around only made it easier for the militias and AQI to spread chaos blah blah blah... and by no means do I mean to suggest that was the only fuck up - simply one that was required to be avoided to accomplish the quick turn around
