well, what is your solution? their home countries won't take them.

we could always start WWIII and try to force them back on their home countries

They were captured in terrorist training camps. They were ordered released essentially because they're fight is not with the US, it's with China. If I recall correctly there's a sizable population in exile here, and the US is generally held in high regards by the Uygurs because of that.

we don't need them. who cares what the Uygurs think of us? the fact that they were captured in terrorist training camps is all the evidence i need to come to the conclusion that they should not be set free in the US. you want them plotting against China from here? if they should be released, then release them, but not here. they are also just one example of the people in Gitmo who's nation will not take them.

I can't seem to find the article at the moment. I know there's a foundation in Washington setup (the UAA) to raise awareness of their cause.

Their nation would want nothing more than to take them. Maybe they could publicly execute them in front of thousands of their countrymen like the Chinese have routinely done to Uyghurs in the past. It's an oversimplification to lump them in with 99% of the other terrorist captured in Afghanistan. From what I know of the issue, they have a pretty good reason to be miffed at the Chinese. If the US doesn't take them they'll find homes in another western democracy. Canada, Sweden, and Australia I believe are possible locations as well.

Re: Gitmo detainees to be potentially US-bound

i'm sure they have every right to be miffed at the Chinese and I admit that their situation is complicated. of the nations that will not take back their citizens, we have Yemen taking the lead, Azerbaijan, Algeria, Afghanistan, Chad, China, and Saudi Arabia. they were just an example used in the article.

"Among the detainees whose fate remains undetermined are 17 ethnic Uighurs, from the Central Asian region of China, who have been ordered released by a judge. The U.S. has refused to turn the men over to China, which considers them part of an separatist group."

somehow i doubt they are the ones down there getting waterboarded.

besides, they may not have come to those training camps to plot against us, but the people who were running the camps sure as hell were. I see it as a bit more than "wrong place, wrong time"

oh hai, current Taliban chief responsible for british and american deaths and increasingly sophisticated bombings in Afghanistan spent six years in Gitmo. we sent him back to Karzi, and then let him free.

I believe it's only about 20 in all that are under consideration for release here. I don't know the stories on the other 3 or 4.

Where else would they go then?

Yeah, but you know there's just as many, if not more, stories of people who were put in there for no damn good reason. Bottom line is, I don't think the people who are in charge of how gitmo is decommissioned are stupid enough to just let anti-western radicals out on our streets. No one's that stupid.
