so xian, how do you feel about the argument saying that keeping qualifiers in about male/female makes it promoting segregation?

and that it's not about getting "gay marriage", but getting marriage for two consenting adults.

that's my understanding of the argument that's going to be presented to the federal courts - against the homo communities wishes, btw, iirc.

We are supposed to all be eqaul in the eyes of the law regardless of our different identities. The gays particular identity is not acknowledged by the law. And going back to the original topic, that is what Obama did, he acknowledged us. Its a small gesture that may lead to larger ones. Or not. Still something that hasnt been done before. Still something shining a positive light on the gay community. Lip service, patronitism, or not I'm happy to see the leader of the free world make such a statement. Whether he means it or not is immaterial, what the masses take from it is what matters.

A coalition of gay rights groups said Wednesday that a federal same-sex marriage lawsuit brought by two high-profile lawyers is premature and they'd rather work through state legislatures and voters to win wedding rights.

On Tuesday, lawyers Theodore B. Olson and David Boies, who represented opposing sides in the 2000 Bush v. Gore election challenge, announced they had filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of two gay men and two gay women.

As far as selling hope, Obama is doing a bang up job. The thing that folks like Xian and David Austin are looking for are the cold, hard actions or implementation of processes that bring about change.

We're past the first 100 days, but he has a year (to me) before we start grabbing pitchforks, tar, and feathers.

We all get that as explained many times over in the thread. It's still a positive thing for the community and the fact that is came from our president, makes it a step forward, albeit a small one, in the right direction. Rome wasnt built in a day or a month for that matter...

Btw, on the subject of gay laws, I'm going to be doing music at a party next week that will have Matthew Shepards mom at it.

I'm not really sure what to say assuming I meet her...

I guess I'll just say nice to meet you and run off and not address any of the typical issues.

are you talking about gender neutral language? I'm willing to tolerate it if it makes things more clear in technical situations. Otherwise I think its an assinine pursuit to purge language of gender terms.

Two consenting adults can marry now. So, it must be about same sex marriage mustsn't it? That's one of the few, but not only, classes of consenting adults that cannot marry.

And you are. All Americans are equally prohibitted from marrying some one of the same sex... in most jurisdictions.

Right. Because that would be inequal protection if the law meant one thing to this class and another to that class. The law applied equally can yield disparate results. That's because people are not identical.
