Agreed that the world needs peace and especially that region. If reaching out to the people behind the leaders can work I'm all for it... just dubious. How long have we been told that Iran was about to tip and all we needed was to support the people against the Mullahs?

as i remember... the whole Iran thing was a total surprise in 1979. i was a little kid, but i remember reading that the CIA and the US was completely taken off guard when all of that went down.

president membersonlyjacket (Ahmadinejad) believes it it his duty to usher in the 12th imam bringing the Apocalypse.

It's a delicate situation over there and us opening dialogue to the 1.6 billion muslims is a wonderful thing and I feel his speech was great in taking those steps. the US not talking to them in the past hasn't done us any favors at all.

He does. And there's some debate about whether Khomeni was the 13th Imam or not... you gotta read that book I mentioned. I knew sghit was fucked there but had no clue how bizarrely and deeply fucked it was.

In 1951 Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh was elected prime minister. As prime minister, Mossadegh became enormously popular in Iran after he nationalized Iran's oil reserves. In response, Britain embargoed Iranian oil and, amidst Cold War fears, invited the United States to join in a plot to depose Mossadegh, and in 1953 President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized Operation Ajax. The operation was successful, and Mossadegh was arrested on 19 August 1953. After Operation Ajax, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi's rule became increasingly autocratic. With American support, the Shah was able to rapidly modernize Iranian infrastructure, but he simultaneously crushed all forms of political opposition with his intelligence agency, SAVAK. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini became an active critic of the Shah's White Revolution and publicly denounced the government. Khomeini was arrested and imprisoned for 18 months. After his release in 1964 Khomeini publicly criticized the United States government. The Shah was persuaded to send him into exile by General Hassan Pakravan. Khomeini was sent first to Turkey, then to Iraq and finally to France. While in exile, he continued to denounce the Shah.

sure. he essentially stole the leases & infrastructure paid for by AIOC. as a company, i'd be fucking pissed too. it's not the AIOC's fault Iran couldn't (1) negotiate better terms. they negotiated with them and brought them in. & (2) run the oil fields and refineries at all after nationalizing the industry.

was a bs move and should have been handled when contracts were up. he over promised and ran on a platform where he said all their problems would be fixed if they nationalized the oil. a short sighted soap box that obviously didn't play out at all in his favor. again, he was so short sighted, he didn't even have a plan in place for technicians & engineers to run the refineries. they had nobody. so regardless of the blockade or sanctions... they couldn't even produce anything anyways.

That religious character of Khomenism is a little more of a discussion of the curious nature of his take on Islam and less a matter of oil/nationalization-seizure of foreign assets/shah/cia etc

Sharia law doesn't apply to non-Muslims in Britian... or rather they aren't pushing for that. They wouldn't be pushing for that here either. In fact I haven't heard a single Muslim leader ever ask for that either.
