For the record, I didn't care for either major party candidate on the ballot and voted for the lesser of 2 evils. Like Bush, I wouldn't even call McCain a true conservative...I think they are both panderers. There is no other explanation for the blatant flip-flopping.

1) What can I say, I don't mince words and I tend to go for the death stroke whenever possible. Years of having to debate my dad at the dinner table made me more than a little cut-throat by nature when it comes to debating.
2) I agree that he's a panderer and that he's not an 'old-school' conservative, but I'd label him a bit of a neocon more than anything else. His only 'old-school' qualities are the aversion to pork(at least relative to most senators) and his focus on military strength. I think his 'maverick' label was largely undeserved because he was pandering to the only way he could possibly take out Dubya in '00, and it almost worked. So in '08 he reversed field and started pandering to the far right. FWIW, I think Dubya did relatively little pandering in '04.

McCain's guided, imo, more by a personal code of duty and honor. That's a subjective thing and that's (one reason) why he gives traditional conservatives fits. Who knows how he'll react to an issue - the only accurate guide... he'll react in the way he thinks is honorable.

GW didn't do much pandering. Hell, he hardly ever spoke to the press to explain what he was doing and why... his ratings reflect that casual disregard he had for the press (and they returned the favor).

McCain's guided by a desire to stay elected and/or a desire to seek higher office and will mold himself however he needs to make that happen. The end result is the unpredictability you mentioned.

And Dubya did plenty of pandering in '00.

I said abstinence ONLY, which is what a lot of conservatives support. Abstinence education, while COMPLETELY unreasonable would he helpful. You just have to understand that people have been fucking at age 16 since the dawn of man. It's human nature. When a person gets the urge, they find an outlet. Abstinence education would be a great tool and much more widely accepted if it was taught as an economical tool and not as a moral or religious deterrent.
