that was a sarcastic joke with johnny look at the post above. of course english will be around in 20-100 years, but the sheer dominance that it has enjoyed will be slowed due to the growth of india and china. not that indians dont speak english due to the colonization, but it would be ignorant to think that it would only be important to know english. i said 'the only language that will matter', i didnt say 'english will be removed from the world's conscious'.

The sarcasm was directed at english remaining the dominent language it was not intended to be a self-depricating remark where you believed the opposite to be true. Your back-tracking is really amusing though.

If we go with that claim we're back to you asserting that english will not be the dominant language of trade and world diplomacy etc within 20 years.

So, which do you want to go with? That you really didn't mean it or that you did mean it?

If you meant english won't be the dominant language then what will? You're going to have to work awfully hard explaining why it won't. There's nothing inherently superior to english - it's one fucked up language. However when you consider the scope of the commonwealth and anglo-sphere and the influence on dozens of other states its pretty clearly the easiest language of convience... without regard to the billions of speakers who aren't going very far in the next 20 years.

i have a friend here "visiting" from central america. lets just say her status is complex. anyway, we were watching the news the other afternoon and they were debating a border fence. she asked me "what are they so mad about?" so i explained that the person on the left wants the US to build a fence down at the border to help reduce illegals from coming across and the man on the right is mad about that and doesn't want a fence.

she goes and i quote:
"how can he be mad about him wanting a fence? it's only logical that he would want a fence. it's his country. what is this man's problem? i don't understand this country."
