That's some circuitous logic there...

Just saying that europe can spend much more on social welfare because they have the luxury of not having to spend on their own defense.

Our system isn't crumbling. It is expensive. It needs reform and other fixes to be sure.

Less military spending would likely result in less world stability (many aggressive states are kept in check by the knowledge that we'd intercede - they'd be less inclined to be so restrained if they didn't think we'd do so). A less stable world is a world with greater economic turmoil - markets prefer peace. We don't really need more problems than we already have.

No not the same thing. There is no established presence. We closed "all" of our bases there as per request of the people.
