I had googled "Troops leaving Iraq" yesterday and only got sites similar to my original post. CNN, NBC, FOX, etc were nowhere on the first page. They are now though.

It's nowhere near the public presence that everyone is familiar with though. Our troops will be limited to the bases outside of the cities and the countryside. No more of us patrolling the streets.

I may be just not paying enough attention, but it has been all over the news today....but no build up to the festivities today....I am quite liberal, but why has the media not been hyped about the recent news? I had to dig deep into Google to understand what is really going on today and what led up to it....why has there been no coverage?

In my experience, if it doesn't involve a body count, military stuff doesn't make the news. All the good things I saw happen when I was there never got covered by anybody other than the Marine Corps Times. Why do you think you didn't hear much about Afghanistan for about 2-3 years?

that's because technically they ARE NOT leaving Iraq. they are pulling out of the major cities and will reside on bases. if you go off willy-niily and google the wrong stuff, of course you aren't going to get what you're looking for. again... troops are NOT leaving Iraq (even as the subject of your thread states). 130,000 troops are staying in Iraq.

Do you think that N. Korea is a little pissed about us still being stationed in S. Korea or is it acting as a deterrent to more agressive action from the North?

I can't really take a side either way on that particular country, but I don't think we need to have bases everywhere, especially if the people don't want us there, which they don't seem to in Iraq. We already have bases close to the proximity and I don't agree with extreme expansive action of our military presence.

While I think it's good for our defenses and the defense of our allies, it can be a bit annoying I am sure for the citizens of those countries.

Nope. But I do think it wise to maintain a presence in those where they're wrapping up a war and trying to prevent it from breaking out again.
