I would say that Obama's talking about it because his buddy was the one in cuffs. Less than 24 hours earlier, he was speaking about how the black community can make no more excuses and must begin to take responsibility for their actions (in response to a question about the high rate of African Americans in the prison system).

there's one factor that you guys are forgetting.


the door was jammed because of an earlier attempted break in. gates should have been HAPPY that 1) the neighbors called and were watching and 2) the cops were there.

Ha ha. Thats my favorite part. When the cops were leaving with him in custody, they were trying to make sure that he had his keys so they could lock his door for him.

"Nope, can't lock lock my door, someone broke in a few days ago and damaged my door."

That's what I saw too. Someone had tried to break in while he was gone on his trip. I bet he loved that the cops responded to that call.

For a Harvard Professor the guys doesn't seem to be very smart.

No shit, incredibly unwise of him to say anything about it. Seems as though the arresting cop was "was hand-picked by a black police commissioner to teach recruits about avoiding racial profiling, is calm and reliable."

i don't think it's that he's not smart. it's more a long the lines of having a REALLY bad day. maybe something set him off going thru customs to the cab ride home. i can tell you every time i come thru customs in the US i'm fucking livid. it's amazing how stupid ours is run compared to other countries. fucking Turkey had more high tech stuff than DFW's new international terminal.

but back on topic... i think it was a culmination of things = a really bad day. we all have our moments.

i really think Obama saying what he did was stupid and from looking at all of this shows Gates acted stupid. we don't know what happened... i'd love to hear from the neighbor and the peanut gallery that witnessed it all.

Eh, it’s all just a clever ploy to draw attention away from Obama’s healthcare. I mean, every single one of those questions were cherry picked before the president even stepped into the room. They always are. That’s how these things go down, right? So why did Obama’s people feel it necessary to allow that question through? Why did they think his answer would be ok? I mean all of his responses (for the most part) are planned and calculate in advance at these press conferences. What was the purpose of bringing up this subject and why give such an answer if you weren’t there and don’t know the details under your own admission?

Was it to draw our attention away from a Health Care Bill that is losing popularity by the day? A little distraction… “Hey! Look over there!”? I don’t know the answer. I just think this entire thing about Obama getting involved in a local issue between a cop and a Harvard Professor on a nationally aired press conference is a little funny.

Yes, back in Chicago they had a thing they referred to as "institutional racism." Meaning that a black man can be a cop and still be a racist since it's the institution of law enforcement that is assumed to be inherently racist.

These were the same politicians who wanted to reduce police presence in low income communities suggesting that it was law enforcement who was directly responsible for the increase in crimes in those neighborhoods.

Their theory was if you lower the police patrols, fewer people would be arrested suggesting that there'd be fewer crimes committed/reported.

I'm not even making this up. I swears.
