Re: He is nagging a lot...

WASHINGTON – Trying to tamp down an uproar over race, President Barack Obama said Friday he used an unfortunate choice of words in commenting on the arrest of black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. and could have "calibrated those words differently."
The president said he had telephoned the white policeman who arrested Gates, and he said the conversation confirmed his belief that the officer was a good man and an outstanding officer.
Obama said later that he had spoken to Gates as well.
The president caused a stir when he said at a prime-time news conference earlier this week that Cambridge, Mass., police had "acted stupidly" by arresting Gates, a Harvard scholar and friend of the president's, for disorderly conduct.
On Friday, Obama made an impromptu appearance at the daily White House briefing in an effort to contain the controversy. He said he continued to believe that both the officer, Sgt. James Crowley, and Gates had overreacted during the incident, but the president also faulted his own comments.
"This has been ratcheting up, and I obviously helped to contribute ratcheting it up," he said. "I want to make clear that in my choice of words, I think I unfortunately gave an impression that I was maligning the Cambridge police department and Sgt. Crowley specifically. And I could've calibrated those words differently."
Seeking to lighten the situation further, he said he had invited both Crowley and Gates for "a beer here in the White House."

lol - so much for Gates' lawsuit when the President is on record denying any acts of bad faith.

St. George (Stephanopoulos) must've taken someone under his angel wings and blessed them with his spin doctor/saving ability.

I agree I would hopefully just go the yes sir no sir route but sometimes you aren't polite even when you should be for other circumstances. It seems like the best thing to do would have just left and let the asshole be. he wouldn't be thought of as a racist and there would be no story is all I am saying.

there's another possibility... he could have been a burglar robbing the house and leaving Gates to finish his business would have gotten the cop fired

Re: He is nagging a lot...

I knew that cop was a racist bastard! The president's poor victimized disabled friend is just trying hobble down the steps without the aid or even the slightest concern of his good friend the president all while being attacked by that racist s.o.b. cop!!

Re: He is nagging a lot...

Once, on an R&R from Iraq, I had to break into my own house. My sister had changed the alarm code. Garland PD was quick to show up. I managed to clear everything up in about 3 minutes.

Cop Lady: (with hand on her gun) How's it going? What's up?
Me: I live here. I guess I should show you my license, huh?
Cop Lady: (hand still on gun) That would probably be a good idea.
Me: Ok, it's in my back pocket here. (slowly reaches for and retrieves wallet) Here you go.
Cop Lady: (takes hand off of gun) Ok. Why are you breaking into your house?
Me: I'm back home from Iraq for a few days and nobody knew I was coming. My sister changed the locks and the alarm code while I was gone.
Cop Lady: Ok, well you should call home next time.
Me: (laughing) Yeah. That's what I get for trying to make it be a big surprise.
Cop Lady: (laughing) That would stop us from having to come out.
Me: No problem. Thanks for your work. Have a good day.
Cop Lady: You too. (gets in car and drives away)

See, the police officer could have tagged and bagged me. She could have called her buddies and had my ass driven down town until my sister got off work to come get me. Instead we had a pleasant conversation and she went on her way. This is because I treated her like a pro and was nice. I'm not saying kiss cops' asses. Treat them like they're doing a job and they'll give you huge amounts of leeway. That dumbass proffessor could have been rid of the cop in about 5 minutes. All he had to do was say: "Yeah, my house was broken into last week and now the door's messed up. You gotta force it open. Here's my ID. Thanks for looking out for my neighborhood officer. Have a nice day and be safe out there." The officer would have said. No sweat. Happy to serve. Book smarts and common sense are not the same thing.
