Hardly. Living in NY on less than $300k isn't difficult; my sister's family does it quite well on a fraction of that. They have their own home(a reasonably nice one at that), they have 2 kids, and they're nowhere near $300k in income. This lady needs to STFU and move herself down the ladder to a self-sustainable rung. Sell the house, move into one half the size, and learn to live within her means. I have no pity for someone who is 'squeaking by' on $300k a year, they put themselves in that position. How you have any sympathy for her at all is remarkable given the constraints you're raising your kids under.

$40k for a nanny isn't per se unreasonable... there are some jobs where lowball offers aren't necessarily attractive on that basis. The person in charge of your kids day to day would one of those.
