Bible a REQUIREMENT to be taught in Texas schools this year?

I'm hoping this is not what the author of the article is implying it is. I did note the lack of details about what the requirement actually is. Still...this is disturbing if true.

Whitehouse already offers a Bible elective. "The purpose of a course like this isn't even really to get kids to believe it, per se, it is just to appreciate the profound impact that it has had on our history and on our government."


If taught as an elective for the purpose of demonstrating its significance to the western canon I see no issue at all. As a required course? I'm doubting that all students will be required to take such a class.

If it was about getting kids to believe; you, me and the Supreme Court agree that it would have to go... posthaste.

I read in the Daily Texan they are just now starting to offer Bible courses at the University. Like PETA said, it would not be about beleiving as much as it would be educating. I have to admit to being a complete bible illiterate and agnostic but am very fascinated with its origins and meanings. Money permitting, I would definitely take this class.

I took a philosophy class in '96 called 'Religion & Morality' that involved reading pretty much the whole Bible in a semester.

You ever read the bible? I read it one time. I was eight years old. My daddy just got hisself killed over a shot of whiskey and my mama said "we're going back East to start over". So she gave me a bible, sat me down in the train station, told me to read it. She was gonna get our tickets. Well, I did what she said. I read that bible from cover to cover. It took me three days. She never came back.

True.. nor did ol' Soloman ever intend to do such a thing. Putting people to a test that requires them to declare their true feelings is, however, a GREAT idea.

I'd like to agree but you know as well as I do that it isn't for everyone.. for a myriad of reasons. What you want is the resulting understanding and ability to empathize with people of differing Ps of View. Fair. Just entirely unreasonable to expect.

Not really. I could give a shit about a religion's point of view most of time. Its more to do with understanding the world one lives in.

i see no problem with a bible class being offered as an elective. There are many approaches one could utilize for this class: an historical examination of early christianity; examining the text as solely earlty literature or simply as mythology. The invariable problem is some dumb dumb will get the job and fail the children.
