Bad salary? It's a pretty good salary when you run the numbers on how much teachers would earn if they worked a full lenght work year, instead of a teacher work year (all that great built in vacation!).

Teacher Numbers:
188 work days * 8 hours a day = 1,504 work hours

250 work days * 8 hours a day = 2,000 work hours

1,504 Teacher hours is about 75% of a "normal" persons 2,000 working hours, which means when you take that 45,600 and add in what a normal person working an additional 500 hours would make, you end up making 60k a year. That is not bad, teachers get 25% of the year off, of course your not going to be making 60k a year, but making 45k with 1/4 of the year on vacation isn't too shabby.

No, as soon as the last class ends at 3:20pm the teacher is completely done for the day. They don't have lesson plans to go over, or papers to grade, or anything like that. They just go out and rave it up because they got the life.

I totally understand there is work to do outside of the school, most professionals, non-hourly wage earners, I know work many more then 40 hours a week, so I call it a wash.

Smaller classrooms in private schools, I will give you, however, most private school teachers earn less then public school teachers. Why do the kids learn more? Their parents, in general, are more involved in the educations process.

Instead of letting them learn in whatever school they were assigned to by virtue of where they choose to live, they choose to pick the proper school for their kid and send them there. Often times it's a bit further then the elementary or middle school a mile or two away. When you start shelling out $1,000's a year extra for your kid to go to private school, you are much more likely to be involved and make sure you kiddo is doing all their home work and making progress. There are always exceptions, but that is the generalization.

digital chalkboards are useful... that's not the problem. The problem is utility at a price point. A wrech is useful. A $1000 wrench is too. It's just not worth $1000.

Private school teachers aren't necesarily paid more. Class sizes aren't necessarily smaller. However, students in those schools tend to come from families with a much stronger focus on educating their children - contra - parents who are grateful that public school exists so their kids have some place to go during the day. Parents of children not willing to work hard on their studies are more likely to send them to public school to avoid extra costs.
