last summer, pre total economy collapse, oil gets as high as 140 a barrel. winter its at 36, this summer due to recession, it only rises to the mid 70s. watch oil go back to the low 40s in a few months, and next summer it will rise to above 80. Pure speculation runs oil futures and the DMN already had a article a few months ago saying that there are senate comittees looking into curbing the problem.

Government should Nationalize the Energy industry. all "profit" should be redistributed to the general population.

The Senate is looking into legislating supply and demand

One of the problems, as it was explained to me, is that recession coupled with relatively low revenue/bbl results in less cash on hand for oil exploration which will contract supply resulting in higher prices down the road... of course that'll lead to more exploration and more oil but that doesn't mean we aren't in a position where the price jumps again

trade protectionism is fucked up under most cicumstances... here even more.

What about jumping a step and simply importing Brazilian ethanol or is that what you meant? Can we get that shit at the pump cheaper than straight gasoline? If so, why aer we not doing it? Ethanol isn't sugar cane - but does it violate current tariffs?

It violates the tariff because the source is sugar cane. You can thank the US farmers for getting a quota thrown into law where 85% of all sugar the US consumes has to come from growers....wait for it....in the US.
