A parasite we know isn't human nor was it made from human sperm and egg and won't grow up to be your daughter or son.

A lump of tissue is also a product of the life producing it and it will not grow up to be a son or daughter either.

Those are scientific facts Kevin. Denying that unborn baby is a baby is usually a method employed to make terminating that baby more palatable.

If a woman had miscarried in the 35th week would you have consoled her with, no worries it was just a parasite, mass of cells or a lump of tissue?

I'd offer that it you cannot define what is growing inside the preganant mother that perhaps you could accept the definition of scientists and doctors who can?

The facts are the facts; it is a baby. The law on the otherhand is a different thing... and it says we can kill that baby under certain circumstances. I don't think refusing to accept the facts changes anything.

When someone is brain dead and still has a beating heart and functioning organs science recognizes that without activity in the cerebral cortex that person is dead. A fetus may have a beating heart, it may have functioning organs, but it does not have a active cerebral cortex. Its like a computer with a blank hard drive. It needs memories, experiences, thoughts, feelings, before its human and I believe that begins at the moment of birth. Scentifically speaking there is no complex activity in the cerebral cortex until after the 20th week, and it really doesnt get going until after birth.

So according to the science that defines brain death for the medical community a fetus is not a living human.

Now take the thought that a person lived to experience brain death. The moment you rob something of the ability to live to even acquire memory is when you know you are treading dangerous water.

In the case of the brain dead, they at least got to live.

The fetus has functioning cerebral cortex (after about month 5)... and it'll function better and better as long as no one kills it.

Further, that sack of meat is still alive - though with minimal chance of recovery. The fetus has an outstanding chance of becoming a fully functioning human.

I think you're getting at two related issues; consciousness and quality of life. An unconscious human with no neural activity is still alive even if the quality of that life could be regarded as minimal.

Are you certain? Again, presuming it doesn't, it will as long as no one kills it. The functioning of the cortex is not the determinative factor.

Well, according to your assertion that brain dead human is brain dead which is not completely dead. And, the fetus will, again presuming no cerebral activity, gain that function. You've apples and oranges.

Sorry, E-Brake, but your argument is a slippery slope in its attempt to define a class of subhumans. The attempts at differentiation don't pass the logic test. What you deem as a "parasite" is a human being in development.

As far as your argument about the hardships facing a world without legal abortion, I think it is overstated and going back to the idea of taking responsibility for one's actions would make people think twice before doing the deed. I would even concede that abortion in the case of rape/incest is allowable, even though the practice itself is still heinous.
