I'm an advocate of free market and capitalism. I don't know why but I always get this view of a socialist being like someone who drives a shitty beat up old car parking right next to someone driving a nice Masserati and slamming his door against it to make him feel a little better. Do I have the wrong impression?

free market capitalism in its purest form hasnt really existed in the us for a very long time. it never will. socialist policies will always be in place for the U.S. as long as there is taxpayer money to support it. i think total chaos would be a certainty if welfare was cutoff.

obviously you dont want to lean one way or the other too far, but equal parts can make the whole better. its like the healthcare debate. what is wrong with the govt having health care for poor folks, and others be able to have private plans? i guess you guys will answer that.

Depends on how you define "others." If the point is to provide for those who cannot provide for themselves then those able but unwilling to buy insurance for themselves shouldn't be subsidized with tax dollars.

Well, deregulating the airline industry, just by way of example, provided for widescale competition resulting in affordable fares for people who up until then could never afford to fly... incidentally, Teddy Kennedy was heavily involved in that.

As for Enron and California that had more to do with CA refusing to produce its own energy. The EPA agreed to waive emissions caps so CA could do it but they opted to let Texas pollute Texas a bit more and then take it up the ass from Enron... CA is not known for fiscal wisdom.
