We all know we need the government for many things. Usually we need them for things we cannot do ourselves, like maintaining a fire department, interstate highways, US Navy etc. However, health insurance is something 85% of Americans provide for themselves either through individual purchase or seeking out employment where health insurance is a form of compensation.

edit II: Anyway, back to my original point. We rely on the government to act where we cannot. The current debate, whether it admits this on its face or not, is centrally concerned with that issue. Can we provide health insurance for ourselves without government help? Do you think that government taking over the healthcare system (the public plan will inevitably lead to the near total - if not toal - demise of private insurance and many on the left have said explicitly that this is their long term goal - the public option is just a first step towards it) will yield cheaper, higher quality results? Rationing healthcare is a central part of health insurance. Do you trust a private company that you can sue less than a government that you cannot to be that decision maker? Currently privately paid care either cash payers or those with private insurance subsidize the government plans. Taking more people off of those private plans in order to put them on gov't plans which compensate providers at a lower rate will create significant dfifficulties for providers. Think ity can stiull be done without raising taxes or adding to the deficit?
