Lol - never mind that fire depts are creatures of municipalities, not the federal government. Never mind that their primary function is to stop the spread of fire to other people's shit and secondarily to rescue the home owner's shit... note how fire depts focus not so much on damage mitigation to the effected property as they do on stopping it from burning down the neighbor's house. In said light a more accurate analogy would be going to the doctor and if you have an iffectious disease they just shoot you in the head to prevent it's spread . Now that would be a way to reduce health care costs.

We don't look to fire depts to do things on the cheap... we look for them to be effective. True story, took a course from a prof on law and econ. Former mayor of 1st tier suburb in Mpls. They had contracted w/Mpls for fire dept service. It was a reasonably well heeled suburb andf it wanted the prestige associated with having as fire dept. Bakken, the prof and mayor pointed out that Golden Valley hadn't had a home fire in over a decade and if they presumed one very nicve home lost per year it would be cheaper to rebuild that home on the public dime than to pay the yearly fire dept budget. Now there's an analogy for you.

Wondeful.. fact is that fire departments are creatures of the municiple level and should be in order to be more immediately responsive to local needs. That the feds would feel the need to fund an agency to tell those municipalities what they should is in no way surprising... unnecessary and wasteful but not surprising.
