Let it be known that Sen John Cornyn voted against the amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill that would punish contractors if they "restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court."

wow. so.. John... government contractors that COVER UP RAPE, assault, etc. shouldn't be punnished?

One provision that he agrees with may well not be enough to over come the many he does not agree with.

it passed (dealt ONLY with DOD contractors covering up rape, etc.)
the amendment is now added to the FY2010 Defense Appropriations Bill


in other words: he wasn't voting against a bill that has various amendments added... he voted against adding this specific amendment.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest he has a basis for his vote that's less vampric.

McCain produced some whopper face palm votes too that were usually a result of some principled stand that worked a bizarre result.

The bill also zeroed out funding for the VH-71 replacement presidential helicopter, which had also drawn a veto threat. That program will possibly start over from scratch.

The Senate passed the bill Tuesday 93-7, which sets up a potentially contentious conference with House negotiators. The House defense appropriations bill includes money for both programs.

Bloomberg News reports that the authorization bill already in conference, which actually tells the military how much it can spend on the various programs, includes money for the JSF alternate engine. Conferees Tuesday agreed to allocate $560 million to fund an alternative engine for the F-35 fighter jet, sources close to the talks said.

But the appropriations bill is the mechanism that actually makes money available.

it was Franken's rider and the objection, near as I can tell is that the 30 regarded it as a direct attack on a specific company... not quite a bill of attainder but something akin to it.

well.. Halliburton has covered up stuff. but this is a broad amendment not allowing any contractor from covering up stuff and if so, they get punished.

would appear that of those 30 voting against the rider 23 voted for the whole bill which included that rider

from what I was able to get at quickly the amendment was clear with its intent (not that I'd have voted against it but this was one of those bitter pills Senators and Congressmen sometimes do to one another for cheap headlines... and pills which some always swallow... like Cornyn did) and that was directed at KBR

Weird! I didn't know this story was still in the works. I was in Iraq when this happened. This case is the 1 incident which caused a 'no alcohol' rule for every single KBR employee in Iraq/Kuwait.

If you read the amendment, you will see why Sen. Cornyn voted against it. Let's be realistic, Sen. Cornyn does not want females working with KBR in Iraq/Afghanistan to be raped without recourse or justice.

It's obvious if you read the Amendment that this is an attack solely directed at KBR. Here it is [now I'm gonna cut and paste, so you fellers don't get all uptight now.. ya hear!]

AMENDMENT PURPOSE:
To prohibit the use of funds for any Federal contract with Halliburton Company, KBR, Inc., any of their subsidiaries or affiliates, or any other contracting party if such contractor or a subcontractor at any tier under such contract requires that employees or independent contractors sign mandatory arbitration clauses regarding certain claims.

It's actually not about Mrs. Jones at all. Sen. Franken is using her story to garner sympathy and support for an amendment that would almost immediately get the KBR contract cancelled. Which is what those of Sen. Franken's persuasion have wanted since 2001.

An amendment stating that companies cannot require an Arbitration Clause or they will lose their contract? That's quite absurd, especially since virtually every contract I've signed in the past 10 years has had an arbitration clause in it. (i.e. cell phones, credit cards, HOA's, etc., etc.)

This is all besides the fact that KBR's states that they were told NOT to proceed with the Rape Investigation by the U.S. Department of State. They were told that the Gov't would handle the rest of the investigation.

---Why aren't they going after incompetence in the gov't? Because the motive is to cancel Halliburton's contract, not justice for Mrs. Jones.
