Ill post back on this later with some funnies... But on a serious note think about this. The Dow crossed 10k for the first time about 10 years ago. Most call it 'the lost decade' talking exclusively in terms of gains... When in fact... Your purchasing power has declined by 25%. So in real terms the Dow is effectively at 7535... in nominal terms of course its ~10k.

Funnies of the day: "Let me put on my 'Dow 10k for the 21st time' party hat." "Is the CNBC circle jerk over yet?" "Funny how the federal fire hose up every bank in Americas ass can make us all so happy that the recession is over. Go easy pulling out... or else things might get messy" This day has been full of LOLs.

Question for DA: If you're a early thirties guy, leave 401k $$ in stocks or put them in bonds? I wish I could diversify my 401k $$ with other commodities, like strippers.

This one of the greatest tipping points in our history. After the mega run we have experienced I would be working my out of long positions. If America wants to save the dollar then the market will tank. You cant have one without the other. One of the only reasons this market has had the extra rocket fuel is due to the dollars precipitous decline. The reason the Fed cant let the dollar slip is because they have to support the massive debt loads we have sold off to foreign entities. The problem is a weak dollar is likely here to stay which could really give us fits. Counties (read China) will start unloading long term USTs and move to the shorter term notes. This will likely crush the 30 year and cause a big spike in interest rates which would push up back in a recession and likely depression. This probably wouldnt happen immediately so the markets could run much much further... at the cost of our spending power. Much like I posted in another thread... this means that your buying power of your cash would sap all of your nominal gains. Like I posted above. $1 at Dow 10k 1999 is now .75 at Dow 10K 2009. Now there is a very real chance that the dollar will experience a huge run up (economic deflation) if there is an event that would cause dollars to be hoarded to pay down actual debt. Which would tank the market even further (new lows) but keep Ts at a decent yield. Personally outside of trading in and out based on proprietary analysis I would be in short term high grade Ts and Bonds. Dont chase the high yield... and stay in the short term. Rest I would keep in cash. I do believe that eventually cash will beat the market (in loses)

Another fun 10k (21.0) stat is market cap.The top 10 market cap in 99 came in at 2.4 trillion The top 10 market cap in 09 comes in at 1.9 trillion Thats half a trillion in market cap lost... 21%. Think about that for a minute.

How much of that market cap in 99 was lost in 2001 during the tech bubble bursting?

The overall metric is pointing to the fact that growth isnt really being achieved as a whole even though the market going higher leads us to believe so.

forget the money and learn to grow your own food, at least fix and mend your old clothes and keep a can opener handy. Pass the beans.
