my wife knows some Mandarin. that's the one to learn... serves most of China.

Cantonese is just really on Hong Kong- and they ALL speak english in Hong Kong/Kowloon. all the signs are even in English.

Considering that they have our entire government by the balls, I would say that Chinese is even more essential than Spanish in the longer run.

It does make good business sense to know Chinese, they make just about EVERYTHING, EVERYONE in the world consumes.

That being said, I think it will be a while before English gets replaced by Chinese as the international language of bidness.

yo trato hablar espanol.
When hearing natives speaking the only problem i usually have is a hard core mexican dialect...it ranges from person to person, but if a person is speaking more spanish that's on tv i can understand that better.

I could write a response to a person better than I could respond in person.

It's helped my worldview alot, i hope to be more fluent one day...perhaps study abroad, who knows.

Farsi is an indo-european language.

Arabic is a semitic language.

That Iranians/Aryans/Persians violently split a religion with Arabs is no reason to suggest their languages are related.

The most important language in the long run is american english. It is the lingua franca of the next several hundred years. Wanna try your hand at creating a keyboard in Madarin? Phoenetic languages require a lot fewer keys than languages with a symbol for each word. Plus, the Anglo-sphere is HUGE and the former Brit colonies still use it as a the common language to proivid a common tongue for the disparate speakers within a localized territory etc etc etc... then there's that whole money thing. The Anglo-sphere overwhelms the world in terms of wealth. Want to make money? Better learn the language of those who hold the gold.



and... I don't speak french anymore but I can read it well enough to get through a newspaper.
