how fluent are you? and does your "personality" change when switching to it? if you have kids, have you introduced your kids to a second language? how does it affect your national and world view?

English is my second language. Before that I spoke our native dialect called Tagalog with a mixture of Spanish and English. I don't speak it anymore but I have a basic understanding when listening. My world view was fucked when we moved from the Philippine Islands to east Oakland at the age of eight. This was the first time I was ever introduced to racism and that I was apparently a hokey not an Asian. Who'da thunk it?

understand a little Greek and a little Turkish. My fam speaks multiple languages at one time, very confusing as a kid. If we caught on to what they were saying, they switched it up.

Spanish I understand faster than I can conjugate an answer. I'm not up to Telemundo speed responses, LOL. Basic conversation in Tex-Mex or even Castellan (vosotros form), I can manage if given an abundance of time. Been working on my Portuguese for my trip in about two years and while I understand a lot, I don't have anyone to really practice with, so my pronunciation is lacking, I'm sure. That and their damn list of irregulars is STUPID long. The things I do for love of Bebel Gilberto.  I've always had an open mind when it comes to other culture because of being a minority. We take a closer look at America than most "Americans" do from the beginning.

i'm learning arabic and as for how it effects my world view... well, i definitely know more arabic speaking people now which incidentally means i know more muslims now. not that all muslims speak arabic but you know what i mean. so i understand a bit more about yet another religion, i feel at home in a mosque, and i find myself using arabic greetings a lot more. asalaamu alaykum, kaafa haluuk? |
